Pass on Extended Warranties
Extended warranties have become a great tool for retail stores and e-commerce sites to increase their revenue. Surprisingly, it’s estimated that Best Buy and similar chains make close to 50 percent of their profits from these last-minute purchases. Truth be told, the odds are heavily stacked against extended warranties ever paying off. Ninety-five percent of electronics work just fine during their first four years of life. Because electronics depreciate in value after a year or two, you can usually replace a broken item with the same refurnished model for a fraction of its cost. Even when it comes to expensive electronics, such as computers, you are typically better off skipping this unnecessary expense.
What you can do for extra peace of mind, is use a major credit card to buy electronics, which in most cases will extend original manufacturer warranties by one year. American Express, Discover, Visa, and MasterCard all offer extended warranty protection as a perk on most of their credit cards. Among these four, American Express has the most lenient policy, which also extends coverage to refurbished electronics.
